Catching up. Again.

Since August Josh finished his first season of tee-ball, we went camping in a yurt, spent countless hours refinishing our banisters, and planted a couple trees. For two months, that doesn't really sound like a lot, but it sure felt like it.

So, first: tee-ball. Josh had great coaches and got a lot better. He got a few hits and is doing a lot better throwing and catching. The whole team was working on sharing the ball. They were all pretty passionate about pouncing on the ball when the other team was up to bat.

Over Labor Day weekend we went camping in Heber with Emily's family. We stayed in the yurts they use for girl's camp. It was a great camp site for people who want to rough it, but just really don't know how. (It still had electricity and running water.)

Josh and Papa Randy put the flag up as soon as we got there.

Then Aunt Pammy laid down the law. Lots of rules for fires and stuff. You can tell how well some of them are listening. But no one fell in the fire.

The kids all slept in sleeping bags in their own bunks.

The girls had a great time playing together and making up songs and games

and throwing wood chips everywhere.

The boys played their own games that were just slightly more violent.

The grown-ups stayed up late sitting around the campfire. The kids got up way too early in the morning and were ready for more fun. We found a fun little hike around a lake nearby, lined up the 9 kids, put some adults at the front and back and tried to get back before it started raining again. We got back to the campsite and made lunch just as the rain picked up again and ate under the pavilion while it rained. It was great to spend a couple days up in the mountains with family. Then we were back to working on the house...

Redoing the banisters took forever. Working in two-hour blocks at night after the kids were in bed, along with a little work on Saturdays while they were awake, we stripped the banisters, sanded them, sanded some more, then sanded a little bit after that, then just a little more sanding. Melia was a great helper during the sanding. Then after we sanded some more, we were finally ready to stain then 2 coats of polyurethane. Then we were ready for 3 coats of primer for the spindles and 2 coats of paint. We don't ever want to work on banisters again.

But they look great. Now we're going to paint the walls! (groan) The house is gonna be great...

This weekend we took some time off from the inside projects to put in a couple fruit trees Kimberley gave to us.

Josh and Melia were a great help digging the hole.

Now we just wait for the fruit, right?

Wow. Those banisters look fantastic! I'm impressed with the amount of time you took to make them look really good. The camping looks like fun. We haven't tried it yet with the kids, but we will be doing it next week. I like the idea of a yurt, especially when hauling kids around with you. And good luck with your fruit trees. I hope you get lots of good jam and pies out of them.
